Research in Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU)
Research in science and technology can play a leading role in the overall economic transformation of a country. Cognizant of this, the government of Ethiopia has recently paid special attention to this issue. The designation of Adama Science and Technology University as a science and technology university with the mandate of conducting problem driven researches and transferring best technologies could be taken as an indicator for government commitment in this regard. With the primary goal of fulfilling this national demand, ASTU has been doing its level best to entrench research culture among its academia. In the last five years alone, the university has granted fund for over 140 research projects initiated by its staff.
As a part of promoting the research culture, ASTU also successfully hosted its first International Research Conference on the theme: Sustainable Development through Science and Technology: Lesson from Emerging Economies from 06-08 September, 2012. Over 400 participants took part in this conference where distinguished professors from renowned universities and research institutes in the world presented their research outputs and delivered plenary speech on various topics. Among those professors are Prof. Keun Lee, from Seoul National University, Korea; Prof. Rajah Rasiah, from University of Malaya, Malaysia; Prof. Sunggi Baik from Pohang University of Science & Technology, Korea; Prof. Ronald L. Jacobs from University of Illinois, USA; Dr. K. J. Joseph from Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, India.
ASTU also hosted the 2nd International Research Symposium on “Ensuring Sustainable Development through Research in Science and Technology” from June 8-10, 2017. The symposium is aimed at creating platform for national and international scholars in the field of Science and Technology to share scientific knowledge and research experiences. This in turn could help in creating strong international and national research collaboration in various areas of scientific research and inspiring ASTU academia for further research. It can also facilitate the establishment of ASTU Centers of Excellence. The symposium was unique forum for academia as distinguished scholars from across the world will convene to share their experiences on the topics selected for plenary speech.
ASTU also successfully hosted “East Africa 1st Cement and Energy Summit in collaboration with i-Capital Institute (Africa). The summit, which lasted for three days (17-19 of March 2016), created platform for industries, national and international researchers, policy makers and suppliers among others to share knowledge and experiences on various issues regarding cement technology.
Hence, utilizing the lessons and experiences we have accumulated in hosting the aforementioned international conferences, we can assure you that we will make the 2nd International Research Symposium on Ensuring Sustainable Development through Research in Science and Technology an interesting event where you can gain memorable and irreplaceable experience.
